TH10 OR
Zoryana Slota, BSN, RN
Senior Staff Nurse, Day Surgery TH10 OR
Zoryana Slota was an applicant who came to our Open House for staff positions in the OR Services. There she was met by staff and leadership who spoke about our highly specialized surgical venues and then she participated in our tour to see each areas of specialization. Originally from the Ukraine, Ms. Slota gained a year of clinical nursing experience while working at an Eye Surgery Center in New York. Although her language skills seemed limited, her personality, motivation and continuous effort made her points come through clearly to all who interacted with her. Everyone she met felt she could weather the challenges that comes with working at our busy NYUMC OR Services and everyone expressed their willingness to help her in meeting these challenges.
Hired by Day Surgery TH10 OR, Ms. Slota started in January 2007 and has invested time and energy in developing the strong foundation needed to become a good leader and in demonstrating her commitment to excel in perioperative nursing. In addition, she signed up and completed a course to help with her language skills.
She has developed expertise in a service during her time here. In the absence of a resource nurse for that service, she accepted the leadership responsibilities to maintain that service and provided individualized patient care needs. It is worth noting that when she was hired, staffing was not optimal and Ms. Slota, who was fairly new to her role as a perioperative nurse, truly stepped up to the plate. She has proven to be an asset to our department and has become a strong team member and an exemplar for other new staff. This goes to show that one need not be experienced in a new area of specialization to be recognized for their efforts. Ms. Slota is an example that new staff can bring a lot to the process!
