Emergency Department

Our Emergency Department is the "front door" for many patients seeking care at NYU-Langone Medical Center. We experience 45,000 visits per year and serve a diverse population from neonate through senescence. We are a NYC 911 receiving hospital designated as a hypothermia, stroke, and STEMI (ST elevation myocardial infarction) center. Our goal is to provide patient and family centered care within our Emergency Department. We have an interdisciplinary approach to patient care, and our ED team consists of professional nursing staff, patient care technicians, emergency service aides, board certified emergency physicians, building service specialists, and volunteers. To that end, we rely on the assistance of many other disciplines within our department, some of which include child life specialists, social work, patient advocates, and care managers.

Our Facilities

We have earned the prestigious Magnet award in 2005 and reachieved redesignation in 2009 for the professions highest honor for nursing excellence. Continuing education for our staff is highly valued to ensure we meet the needs of our diverse patient population. Our professional nursing staff earns minimally 50 contact hours per year and have certifications in BLS, ACLS, PALS, CEN, and CEPN.

Our professional practice model is such that nursing staff, at every level, can participate in a variety of committees and councils (such as Interdisciplinary Practice Council, Education Council, Quality Performance and Improvement, Research, and Recruitment/Retention) all within the department, as well as similar committees and councils hospital wide. We use evidence-based practices, and strongly support a peer education process.

We are currently undergoing a three phase renovation and expansion of our Emergency Department. We will be increasing our square footage to 21,000 square feet. We will have new state of the art resuscitation and trauma bays, as well as designated areas to care for pediatric and adult patients separately.

Staff Quality

As the Emergency Department continues to expand there is great opportunity for employment. We are always looking for exceptional candidates to join our team of highly trained and experienced staff. Applicants should possess a drive to excel and a desire to be a part of change as the Emergency Department moves forward during our expansion. Applicants should be highly motivated and dedicated to their profession with effective communication skills.

All RN's are welcome to apply although it is preferred to have ED experience.
