38th Street Outpatient Surgery

Director:  Gayle Harman, MSN, RN, CNOR

NYU 38th Street Outpatient Surgery is a new state of the art 22,000 square feet free-standing outpatient surgery located at East 38th Street and First Avenue.  It will open mid-October 2009 and will be a center of orthopedic excellence.  It is composed of three collaborative and interactive settings, Admissions, four OR’s, and a 14 bed PACU designed to meet the needs of today’s ambulatory surgery adult (18 years and above) patients.  Our patients will be discharged home directly from our PACU setting.

Our nurses are specialists in either the OR or ADM/PACU nursing and each group will provide specialized patient centered care to their patient population based upon evidence-based practice standards and those of the professional associations of AORN and ASPAN.

Some examples of surgeries to be performed include but are not limited to: Shoulder/Elbow/Wrist Arthroscopies, Knee/Ankle Arthroscopies, ACL reconstruction, Rotator Cuff Repair, Fracture Fixation of Extremities, and Hand Surgery.

When our patients arrive to our pre-operative area on the day of surgery, they are greeted by a nurse who has reviewed their chart and collaborates with the interdisciplinary team (e.g. Anesthesiologist, Surgeon, Fellow, Resident) to develop a unique and specialized plan of care.  The OR nurse is the patient advocate while the patient is in the operating room and maintains a safe surgical environment while providing technical expertise.  When the patient is transported to the PACU phase of care, the registered nurse monitors, stabilizes the patient, and educates the patient and family members in the essential information needed to provide post-op care in the home environment.  Patients are discharged when criteria are met with a responsible adult escort.

Our energetic, customer-focused staff will facilitate a team approach to family centered care and will make teaching a priority in our day to day routine.  In keeping with our Magnet goals, we will have a high regard for continuing education, and encourage committee involvement in order to foster quality improvement unit activities.  Most of all, this interactive unit will support staff who enjoy their career and seek out opportunities for growth and development as an integral component of a vibrant academic medical center community.
